The Dog Aging Project at the University of Washington is currently engaged in research on understanding dog aging and using medications to potentially enhance life span. The team is also currently being reviewed for a grant that would allow them to conduct an enormous longitudinal study on dog aging involving some 10,000 dogs from across America.

Dogs are required to be on leash and you must to pick up after your pet. When we are hanging out on the back patio, we keep the sliding glass doors open and use a 50 ft leash which lets Duffy run in and out of the house.
We and our friends have used the unit to recovery from knee replacement – as the toilets are ADA compliant, the showers have grab bars – and the master bath is a walk in and everything is easily accessible with a walker or a cane.

Border collies are the top dogs in the intelligence category, with some in the breed capable of understanding up to 200 words. Poodles (and poodle mixes like Duffy) are among the smartest.
Dogs also have emotions and feel envy. A 2008 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that when dogs saw other dogs getting treats for a trick they’d been performing unrewarded, the unrewarded dogs became agitated, scratching themselves and avoiding the gaze of the rewarded dogs. They also stopped doing the trick much faster than if they were alone and not getting a reward. The finding demonstrate the envy isn’t just a primate emotion.

Whitewater Preserve is 2,851 acres surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management’s San Gorgonio Wilderness, and includes the year-round Whitewater River. The Whitewater Trail Map is here. There are actually to Lykken Trails. A Southern Route (3.5 miles round trip) (click here for information on South Lykken Trail) and a Northern Trail.
The North Lykken Trail is about 1.5 miles and can be accessed from the west end of Ramon Road. Follow Ramon Road till it ends at the mountain, and you will see the trailhead off to the right. Park on the side street off Ramon Road.
Cactus to Clouds (AKA Skyline Trail) is only accessible from March to October. It is great for an extended hike, but has few travelers. So, be cautious about the heat and bring extra water for you an your dog. The full trail is 18.7 miles and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers.
Araby Trail is a 3 mile one way with scenic views. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking and trail running.
